The sea caves of Morgat

The Crozon peninsula is home to 446 sea caves, the largest concentration in France. These cavities formed over millennia through the sea's erosion of Armorican sandstone cliffs, a rock dating back 475 million years to the Ordovician period. The walls, veined with white quartz embedded in pink and ochre sandstone, create spectacular plays of light when the sun enters the caves and reflects off the deep blue water.

The most famous caves lie to the south of Morgat, accessible only from the sea. The Grotte de l'Autel, the largest, impresses with its monumental vault and colourful concretions. The Grotte Sainte-Marine surprises with its emerald tones and shifting reflections that change with the tide. The Cheminée du Diable, narrow and deep, owes its name to the rush of air that escapes when the swell surges in. These caves are a geological treasure unique in Europe, classified as a natural heritage site.

Boat trip: Vedettes Sirènes

Vedettes Sirènes run boat excursions departing from Morgat harbour, the most comfortable and comprehensive way to explore the caves.

Trip 02: Anse de l'Île Vierge and Coves

Alternative: kayak or paddleboard at low tide

For the more adventurous, you can reach some caves by sea kayak or stand-up paddle at low tide when the swell is light. Kayak hire is available from the Centre Nautique de Crozon-Morgat (around €25 per half day). This option gives you a more intimate experience, right up against the rock, but requires good weather and confident paddling skills. Check the day's conditions before setting out.

Getting there and parking

From Fouesnant, allow roughly 70 km and 1 hr 10 min by road. The quickest route goes through Châteaulin via the D887, then crosses the Pont de Térénez to reach the peninsula. On arrival in Crozon, follow signs for "Morgat": the village is 3 km south of the town centre.

The free car park on Boulevard de la Plage runs directly alongside the beach and has plenty of spaces. In July and August it fills up quickly after 10:00 AM, so arrive early or use the car parks further back in the village.

By public transport, the BreizhGo 937 bus links Quimper to Crozon-Morgat. From Fouesnant, first take the bus to Quimper (BreizhGo line, roughly 30 min), then catch the connection to Crozon. Timetables and fares at breizhgo.bzh.

Wheelchair access is provided, and a tiralo (all-terrain beach wheelchair) is available on request from the Crozon town hall.

Dogs on the beach

Dogs are banned from Morgat Beach from 1 April to 30 September. The ban is in place to protect ringed plovers, small wading birds that nest on the upper beach in spring. The fine for non-compliance is €38.

There is no officially dog-friendly beach in Crozon during the summer season. Outside this period, dogs on leads are tolerated on most beaches on the peninsula. For summer walks with your dog, the GR34 coastal paths offer wonderful alternatives with sea views.

Swimming and safety

Morgat Beach is supervised from 15 June to 15 September by municipal lifeguards. Lifeguard stations are set up in the centre of the beach.

Thanks to its south-facing aspect and the natural shelter of the bay, the beach enjoys particularly favourable swimming conditions. The slope is gentle, the water deepens gradually, and dangerous currents are absent in the supervised swimming zone. It is one of the few beaches on the peninsula where swimming is safe for everyone, including young children.

Water temperature: expect around 14 to 15 °C in June, rising to 16 to 17 °C in July and August. The water warms up gradually in the sheltered bay, and sunny days can add an extra degree.

Green algae: Morgat Beach may see occasional build-ups of ulva (sea lettuce), particularly after strong spring tides. The council carries out regular clean-ups during the summer season. The issue remains occasional and very limited, nothing like the large-scale strandings in the bays of Saint-Brieuc or Lieue de Grève.

Water quality is rated "Excellent" by ARS Bretagne, based on bacteriological samples taken each season.

Water sports

The Centre Nautique de Crozon-Morgat (CNCM) sits right on the beachfront and offers a wide range of activities for all levels and ages.

  • Sea kayak: self-hire at €25 for 3 hours, ideal for paddling along the coast and approaching the sea caves in calm weather
  • Stand-up paddle: €25 for 2 hours, a peaceful way to glide across the calm waters of the bay
  • Sailing: catamaran, dinghy and windsurfing courses for children and adults, led by qualified instructors
  • Guided kayak trips: in July and August, the centre runs accompanied excursions along the cliffs (€23, from age 8)
  • Surfing and bodyboarding: the neighbouring beaches of Pen Hat and La Palue offer better conditions, but on days with moderate swell Morgat has waves suitable for beginners
  • Windsurfing and wing foil: Morgat bay, with its sheltered waters, is an ideal learning spot for these disciplines
