Two kilometres of wild sand facing the Atlantic
La Palue Beach unfurls close to 2 kilometres of fine sand facing the Atlantic swell, on the Crozon peninsula, roughly 1 hr 15 min from Fouesnant. Framed by heather-clad cliffs with no shops or facilities, it is a raw landscape where wind and waves rule, and the most renowned surf spot on the peninsula. The GR34 follows the clifftop above with outstanding panoramas over the Baie de Pen Hir and Pointe de Dinan.

Swimming forbidden: the rip currents of La Palue
Let us be clear: swimming has been forbidden at La Palue since 1975. This is not just a warning; it is a municipal decree motivated by decades of accidents and drownings. The beach takes the full force of the Atlantic swell and, above all, it is riddled with baïnes: extremely powerful rip currents that drag swimmers out to sea in seconds. Even strong swimmers get caught out.
The mechanism is treacherous. Baïnes form between sandbanks running parallel to the shore. Water that builds up between these banks eventually finds an outlet and flows seaward with tremendous force. It is physically impossible to swim against this current. If you are caught in a rip current, your only chance is to let yourself be carried without fighting and swim parallel to the beach once out of the main flow.
Emergency call points have been installed along the beach so you can contact the rescue services quickly. Stay alert, even at the water's edge: rogue waves can strike without warning. The dangers are the same as at Pen Hat Beach, just a few kilometres further north.
The water temperature ranges between 14 and 17 °C in summer, typical of the west coast of the peninsula exposed to cold Atlantic currents. Green algae are not a problem on this beach: the constant swell and rocky shoreline prevent any build-up.
Brittany's premier surf spot
While swimming is forbidden, La Palue is a top surfing destination in Brittany. It is a beach break, meaning waves break over sandbanks, producing varied conditions depending on the tides and swell size. The waves are regular, powerful and work virtually all year round. In winter, experienced surfers come seeking waves of 2 to 3 metres. In summer, conditions are more accessible but still demanding.
La Palue is not a beginner's spot. The currents are strong, rip currents ever-present, and you need solid skills to venture out alone. To learn to surf safely, two local schools offer supervised lessons:
Absolute Surf School
📍 Morgat, Crozon
📞 02 98 17 01 96
🏄 Founded in 1998, a pioneer of surfing on the Crozon peninsula. Group and private lessons for all levels.
Surfing Sardine
📍 Crozon peninsula
📞 06 50 22 14 59
🏄 Surf lessons adapted to the day's conditions. Friendly atmosphere, small groups.
The best time to surf at La Palue depends on the tide and swell. As a rule, mid-incoming tide offers the best conditions. Check the swell forecast before heading out.
Visiting with your dog
Dogs are banned from La Palue Beach from 1 June to 30 September (Crozon municipal decree). Outside this period, they are tolerated. The GR34 coastal path overlooking the beach is open all year round with a dog on a lead.
Getting there and parking
La Palue Beach is accessible from Morgat via the D255, heading towards Pointe de Dinan. The drive takes about 10 minutes from the centre of Morgat. From Crozon town, allow 15 minutes.
Please note: since 2021, car access to the beach has been severely restricted. The beachside car park was removed as part of a rewilding project. You now park in a set-back car park, roughly 1.6 km from the beach. Allow about twenty minutes on foot to reach the sand. In summer, a free shuttle runs between the car park and the beach.
This restriction has had an unexpected positive effect: it has significantly reduced visitor numbers, reinforcing the beach's wild character. It is now one of the least crowded beaches on the peninsula in high season.
The GR34: from La Palue to Pointe de Pen Hir
La Palue Beach is an outstanding starting point for a hike along the GR34 coastal path. The section linking La Palue to Pointe de Pen Hir is considered one of the finest on the entire Breton coastline.
The full route covers roughly 16 kilometres return. The path follows the cliffs southward, passing Lostmarc'h Beach (0.9 km), then the spectacular Pointe de Dinan with its natural arch, before reaching the Pen Hir cliffs and the famous Tas de Pois. The elevation gain is moderate but the terrain can be steep in places. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the full loop.
The scenery is stunningly beautiful: wind-swept moorland, vertiginous cliffs plunging into turquoise sea, inaccessible coves and coastal flora (heather, gorse, sea pinks). On a clear day, you can spot Pointe du Raz to the south and the Île d'Ouessant to the north.

La Palue has no shops or restaurants. The nearest options are in Morgat, roughly 5 km away (10 minutes by car).

Where to stay
The Crozon peninsula is about 1 hr 15 min from Fouesnant by road. A day trip is enough to discover La Palue and the surrounding beaches, but the spectacular coastline deserves a longer stay. Our apartment Avel Heol, facing the sea at Cap Coz in Fouesnant, makes an excellent base for exploring the whole of South Finistère.
